The National Citizen Party (NCP) will not enter into any electoral alliance or compromise with any political party for power or seats, the party’s convenor Nahid Islam said on Sunday.
He made the remarks at a press conference held at the Shaheed Abu Sayeed Convention Centre in Shahbagh, Dhaka, following the completion of the sale of party nomination forms between 6 and 20 November for the upcoming parliamentary election.
Nahid Islam claimed that rumours and false reports about the NCP are being circulated in the media, alleging attempts to steer the party in a particular direction.
He said the NCP aims to field candidates in all 300 constituencies independently and will remain committed to its ideals, policies and objectives even if it fails to win a single seat.
He added that any decision by the NCP to form an alliance or engage in talks regarding one would be publicly announced.
Since the July uprising, political parties have held both formal and informal discussions with one another, which he described as part of democratic political culture. Misrepresenting these interactions, he said, is inappropriate.
Nahid Islam said political parties have become divided due to bargaining over the July Charter, adding that some who were once allies are now “conspiring” and planning an election shaped by division and compromise. Such an election, he warned, would harm the country’s democracy and undermine the new political aspirations and possibilities created by the mass uprising.
Following the press conference, the NCP began a meeting with 1,484 nomination seekers for 300 constituencies at the same venue.
