Home Affairs Adviser Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said on Sunday that there is no fear of the law and order situation worsening ahead of the upcoming national election.
He made the remark while speaking to journalists at the Secretariat after a meeting of the core committee on law and order.
“The law and order situation is gradually improving. As the election nears, rallies and meetings by different parties will naturally increase. When we assumed responsibility, law and order was deteriorating. Over the past one and a half years, it has improved through our efforts,” he said.
Jahangir Alam Chowdhury urged the public to stay aware of proper safety measures during earthquakes and avoid panic.
He noted that some countries use mobile applications that issue alerts roughly 10 seconds before an earthquake and said Bangladesh is considering the introduction of a similar early-warning app.
He added that urban areas in the country suffer from a shortage of open spaces, while water bodies are being filled for construction. “We must address these issues to strengthen earthquake resilience,” he said, calling on all relevant authorities to follow the building code during construction.
Responding to questions about the Fire Service’s Emergency preparedness during disasters such as earthquakes and fires, he said the department proved its capability in several recent incidents.
Efforts are underway to strengthen its capacity further, he said, adding that a major earthquake would require a coordinated response from all sectors.
