Navana Group Vice Chairman Sajedul Islam Shuvro was released on bail hours after being arrested in a case over the non-payment of nearly Tk23 lakh owed to an employee despite a Labour Court order.
Judge Golam Azam of Dhaka’s First Labour Court granted him bail on Wednesday afternoon. Police arrested him earlier in the day from a house in Banani, where he had been in hiding.
Police from Tejgaon Industrial Area and Banani police stations conducted a raid at House 54 on Road 15 in Banani at around 11:00pm on Tuesday.
Police were initially unable to enter the building because the gate was locked and security personnel did not cooperate.
Shuvro’s driver and bodyguard were seen behaving disorderly with police. Although the execution of the arrest warrant was obstructed in violation of the law, police were not seen using any force.
An employee of Navana Group and Aftab Automobiles Limited Kofil Uddin filed a case in the Labour Court (Wages) against four members of the ownership side and four company officials.
In a verdict delivered on 8 May last year, the court ordered payment of nearly Tk23 lakh in dues to the employee. After the money was not paid within the stipulated period, arrest warrants were issued on 3 May against the eight accused.
The court also accepted bail petitions from three other accused who surrendered alongside Shuvro.
