Five winners of a special Umrah campaign organised by “Nagad Islamic”, the Shariah-compliant digital wallet of mobile financial service provider Nagad, reached Jeddah at 10:10am Bangladesh time on Tuesday to perform the holy Umrah, said in a press release.
The winners departed earlier the same day at 3:15am from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight to Saudi Arabia, with all travel costs fully sponsored by Nagad Islamic.
The campaign, run during Ramadan, required users to complete a minimum transaction of Tk3,000 excluding person-to-person transfers to qualify for the Umrah package, with five winners selected from nationwide participants.
The winners are Md Jubayer Hossain, an auto-rickshaw driver from Dhaka; Md Shajahan, a mason from Kafrul in Dhaka; Md Manik, a farmer from Lalmonirhat; Ali Akbar Sheikh, a tea stall owner from Khulna; and Md Redwan Hossain, a contractor from Chapainawabganj.
Md Jubayer Hossain said the opportunity to perform Umrah felt beyond reach due to financial constraints and expressed gratitude to Nagad Islamic for making the journey possible.
Md Manik said he never imagined that small transactions could lead to a pilgrimage to the Holy Kaaba, adding that the initiative fulfilled a long-held dream for ordinary users.
Nagad Administrator Motasem Billah said the organisation was delighted to facilitate the sacred Umrah journey for lower-income users, adding that Nagad Islamic aligns digital financial services with users’ religious and emotional values.
He said Nagad Islamic operates under a dedicated Shariah Board and enables interest-free digital transactions and added that the company remains committed to similar welfare-oriented initiatives in the future.
