The death of Afra Ibnath Khan Iqra, wife of small-screen actor Zaher Alvi, has sparked widespread discussion. Following a case filed by Iqra’s family, questions have arisen about Alvi’s whereabouts: whether he is in Nepal or has returned to Bangladesh.
Iqra was found hanging at her residence in Mirpur DOHS, Dhaka, on the afternoon of February 28. She was taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Police initially indicated that the case appeared to be suicide, pending further investigation.
At the time of the incident, Alvi was reportedly in Nepal for a shoot. After learning of his wife’s death, he shared an emotional post on Facebook expressing deep distress and concern for their son’s future. However, he did not attend the funeral or burial.
Iqra’s family has filed a case with Pallabi Police Station, naming Alvi and his mother, Nasrin Sultana Shiuli, as accused. The allegations include abetment to suicide, negligence and mental torture. A court has directed police to submit an investigation report by April 15. Authorities have stated that Alvi will be questioned upon his return.
Rumours circulated that Alvi returned to Bangladesh on the night of February 28 and was in hiding. However, police sources maintain that he remains in Nepal. Other members of the shooting unit have reportedly returned, but Alvi has not.
Following Iqra’s death, actress Iffat Ara Tithi’s name has also surfaced in public discussion. Unverified claims suggest she was in Nepal at the same time. Some relatives and friends have alleged that personal issues contributed to Iqra’s distress. Police have not confirmed these claims, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Alvi and Iqra married privately on November 9, 2010. Their marriage became publicly known in 2024 after 14 years. They have a son, Rijik.
