Elon Musk has announced that his artificial intelligence tool Grok Imagine will create a full-length version of The Odyssey by the end of 2026, claiming the AI film will be “historically accurate” and faithful to Homer’s ancient Greek epic.

According to Variety, Musk shared the plan on his social media platform X after Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey became a global box office success. The tech billionaire, who had previously criticised some of the film’s casting choices before its release, said Grok Imagine would produce its own version of the legendary poem.

“Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer,” Musk wrote while sharing an AI-generated three-minute short film of The Odyssey posted by an X user.

However, the idea of a “historically accurate” adaptation of The Odyssey has already sparked debate. The nearly 2,800-year-old epic includes mythical elements such as Cyclops, six-headed monsters and a witch who transforms sailors into pigs, making the possibility of a completely historical retelling difficult to define.

Musk’s comments appear to be linked to his previous criticism of the casting choices in Nolan’s film, particularly the decision to cast Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy.

In March, Musk accused Nolan of being an “anti-White racist”, claiming the director cast Nyong’o because “he wants the awards”. Although Musk has not confirmed his preference, the all-white cast featured in the AI-generated short film he shared on X appeared closer to the casting approach he had supported.

Musk had also engaged with posts criticising actor Elliot Page, who some initially believed would play Achilles. Page was later confirmed to be portraying Sinon.

Despite Musk’s criticism before its release, Nolan’s The Odyssey has become a major commercial success for Universal. The film earned $264 million worldwide during its opening weekend and is expected to become Nolan’s highest-grossing film to date.
