Inter Miami have completed the signing of Brazil midfielder Casemiro on a free transfer. However, Major League Soccer has launched an investigation into the club over a possible breach of its tampering rules.
MLS confirmed on Wednesday that it is reviewing allegations against Inter Miami. The league said it is collecting information and will not make any further comments until the investigation is complete.
The issue centres on Casemiro’s discovery rights. In MLS, clubs must secure discovery rights before negotiating with a player. Those rights were held by the LA Galaxy.
Inter Miami and the Galaxy have now reached an agreement for the transfer of those rights. The amount of compensation will be decided after the investigation ends.
This is not the first time Inter Miami have faced action from MLS.
In 2021, the club was found to have broken salary rules. MLS fined the club more than $2 million. Managing owner Jorge Mas also received a separate fine. The club later lost more than $2.2 million in allocation money across the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
The league said at the time that Inter Miami had underreported the salaries of several players, including Blaise Matuidi. Other player contracts were also found to have breached league rules.
Casemiro, 34, has signed a short term deal that runs until the summer of 2027. The agreement also includes an option to extend it until the summer of 2029.
The experienced midfielder joins Inter Miami on a non designated player contract for now.
Club owner Jorge Mas welcomed the signing.
“Casemiro’s arrival reflects the vision and ambition that define Inter Miami,” Mas said.
“We never settle. We are always looking to grow, improve and raise our standards every season. We have built a global club with the vision of becoming not only the best club in the United States, but also a benchmark globally.”
Casemiro enjoyed an impressive final season with Manchester United. He scored nine goals and helped the club finish third in the Premier League to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
The Brazilian also played for his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He has earned 91 international caps.
Before joining Manchester United in 2022, Casemiro spent a highly successful spell at Real Madrid. He won five UEFA Champions League titles and three La Liga crowns with the Spanish giants.
Inter Miami return to MLS action on Wednesday against the Chicago Fire. Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul will miss the match after helping Argentina reach the FIFA World Cup final.
