The Dhaka court has again deferred the submission of the investigation report in the case over the murder of a mother and her daughter in Mohammadpur, setting February 19 as the new deadline.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamsed Alam fixed a new date for submission of the investigation report on Tuesday, prosecution Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman said.
The report was scheduled to be placed before the court on the day, but Mohammadpur Police Station Sub-Inspector Shahidul Osman Masum, the investigation officer, could not submit it, prompting the court to allow more time.
The case was filed on 8 December by AJ M Azizul Islam, husband of the deceased Laila Firoz, following the killing of his wife and daughter. Azizul Islam is a physics teacher at Sunbeams School in Uttara and had been living with his wife and only daughter at the Mohammadpur apartment for about 13 years. Their ancestral home is in Natore.
According to the case statement, Azizul Islam left home around 7am on 8 December for his school. As examinations were under way, he returned home early and found the bodies of his wife and daughter around 11am. Neighbours rushed in after hearing his screams and police were informed.
Police said analysis of CCTV footage from the building showed a woman, identified as Ayesha, about 20, entering the apartment wearing a burqa at 7:51am.
At 9:36am, she was seen leaving the building wearing a school uniform, which investigators said belonged to the murdered ninth-grade student Nafisa.
Police have arrested domestic worker Ayesha Akter and her husband Rabbi in connection with the incident. The couple later gave confessional statements before the court.
