A man was sentenced to three years in prison after being caught attempting to steal a ballot paper at a polling centre in Mirpur, Kushtia.

Shahin Malitha, 28, son of the late Abdul Malitha from Nowda Gobindopur village, was apprehended by police on Thursday morning as he pocketed a ballot paper instead of depositing it in the box at Talbaria High School polling station.

He had reportedly tried to replace it with a blank sheet.

Following his arrest, Shahin admitted to the offence. A mobile court, presided over by the Judicial Magistrate, handed him three years’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Tk1,000.

An additional 15 days’ rigorous imprisonment was imposed in default of payment.

Mirpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nazmul Islam confirmed the sentencing and the details of the incident.
