Fisheries and Livestock and Agriculture Minister Mohammed Amin Ur Rashid has pledged to address existing problems at Comilla Medical College Hospital and pursue an expansion of its bed capacity to 1,000.
The minister made the announcement on Saturday, 10 October, while addressing the Intern Graduation Ceremony (Cum-29) and Doctors’ Reunion 2026 at the newly constructed auditorium of Comilla Medical College. He attended the programme as chief guest in his capacity as president of the hospital’s management committee, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock said in a press release.
The minister said the government was prioritising the supply of essential medical equipment to medical colleges and that he would discuss the allocation of necessary equipment for the hospital with the Health Minister.
He also stressed the importance of proper maintenance, urging hospital authorities to ensure that medical equipment remained functional throughout its intended service life.
Highlighting the need for compassionate, patient-centred healthcare, Amin Ur Rashid said doctors must listen carefully to patients, understand their health concerns and provide appropriate medical advice.
“Spending adequate time with patients and listening carefully to their concerns help build their confidence and provide mental comfort. Sincerity and humane behaviour are as important as medical treatment,” he said.
The minister also raised concerns about environmental pollution and declining food quality, warning that both could adversely affect public health.
He said the government was working to ensure food safety and control harmful pesticides through appropriate measures.
Urging physicians to look beyond prescribing medicines, he emphasised the importance of advising patients on disease prevention, safe and nutritious food and healthy lifestyles.
Proper dietary habits and lifestyle changes could help reduce the risk of many diseases, he said, calling on doctors to raise public awareness about preventive healthcare.
Addressing the newly graduated doctors, the minister urged them to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, responsibility and compassion while dedicating themselves to public welfare.
“Serve the people with sincerity and dedication, earn the trust of your patients and work together to build a better world for future generations,” he said.
Comilla Medical College Principal Md Masum Hasan chaired the programme, while Comilla City Corporation Administrator Md Yusuf Molla Tipu attended as a special guest.
Senior physicians, faculty members and other officials were also present.
