Manchester City will assess forward Omar Marmoush ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby following a knee injury sustained while on international duty with Egypt.
The 26-year-old was substituted in the ninth minute of Egypt’s goalless World Cup qualifier against Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou on Tuesday. Marmoush, who signed for City from Eintracht Frankfurt for £59 million in January, was injured after a robust challenge in the fourth minute.
Although he initially continued after receiving treatment on the pitch, he was soon replaced by Osama Faisal. A photograph of Marmoush leaving the field with medics was shared on the Egyptian Football Association’s X account, along with a statement confirming the forward had suffered a bruised knee ligament.
He was due to undergo an X-ray upon his arrival in Cairo on Wednesday morning.
City’s medical team will examine Marmoush when he returns to England. The forward has scored eight goals in 28 appearances for the club and started the last two Premier League matches, both of which ended in defeat to Tottenham and Brighton. He had come off the bench in the opening-weekend 4-0 victory over Wolves.
