A 28-year-old man was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for misconduct with police at a polling centre in Mirpur, Kushtia, on Thursday.
The detainee, Anik Hossain of Katdahchar village under Poradaha Union, was taken into custody at Poradah Secondary School polling centre around noon.
A mobile court later handed him three months’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Tk500. Non-payment of the fine would add another seven days’ imprisonment.
Eyewitnesses said Anik cast his vote and remained standing inside the centre. A police officer on duty asked him to step aside, after which Anik verbally abused the officer.
Mirpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nazmul Islam confirmed the incident and the subsequent punishment.
