Police have arrested an assistant teacher of a madrasha on charges of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old residential student in Babuganj Upazila of Barishal.
The accused, Md Masum Billah, 26, was sent to jail through a court on Saturday following his arrest.
Babuganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mizanur Rahman confirmed that Billah was apprehended from his residence in Singra Upazila, Natore, on Friday night based on a secret tip-off.
Masum Billah, from Chak Hiyatpur village in Singra, was an assistant teacher at Al Ikra Darul Ulum Nurani and Hafizia Madrasha in Babuganj.
According to the case proceedings, the incident occurred on 15 March night. The accused allegedly woke the student of the Hifz department and took him behind a curtain, where the sexual assault took place.
The victim’s father filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act at Babuganj Police Station on 11 April after the child informed his family members of the ordeal.
Following the filing of the case, the victim was sent to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for a medical examination.
The accused teacher had been hiding since the case was registered until his recent arrest by the police.
