A local BNP leader in Sylhet succumbed to his injuries on Thursday morning after being struck on the head with a brick during a dispute in the Pirerbazar area under Shahparan police station.

Abdur Rahman, 65, who served as the general secretary of Kadirpara Union BNP and was a khadem of Shah Sundar Mazar, was critically injured in the altercation on Wednesday evening.

According to local sources, the confrontation began when a young man, Sumon Ahmed, was urinating by the roadside. Rahman objected, leading to an argument during which he reportedly struck Sumon. In retaliation, Sumon hit Rahman on the head with a brick.

Both men were taken to Osmani Medical College Hospital for treatment. Rahman later succumbed to his injurie, while Sumon reportedly fled the hospital during treatment.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Mohammad Saiful Islam said the body was handed over to the family after an autopsy and was buried following evening prayers. Police are conducting operations to apprehend the accused.

No formal case has been filed yet, though senior police officials have visited the scene.
