Police have started the process of taking legal action against a woman who jumped into the Sugandha River in Nalchity upazila of Jhalakathi with her five-year-old daughter.
The woman, identified as Lucky Akter, was taken into police custody on Saturday night.
The incident took place around 9:30pm on Friday at the Nalchity Ferry Ghat area. Local residents rescued both the mother and child alive after they jumped into the river.
According to police and local sources, Lucky Akter is the former wife of Saidul Islam, son of Adam Ali of Nalchity town.
At the time of the incident, she jumped into the Sugandha River from the Ferry Ghat area with her five-year-old daughter. Seeing this, local residents immediately entered the river and rescued them. The mother and child were later given primary medical treatment.
Lucky Akter said family disputes with her husband had continued since their marriage and that they had recently divorced.
She said she faced various forms of pressure after the divorce to give up her daughter. According to her, the situation caused her severe mental distress, leading her to take the decision out of despair.
Meanwhile, her former husband Saidul Islam confirmed their divorce and said he had filed a complaint with Nalchity Police Station over the incident of her jumping into the river with their daughter.
Tauhiduzzaman, officer-in-charge of Nalchity Police Station, said police initially suspected that the woman had attempted to take her own life and put the child’s life at serious risk.
“Legal proceedings against her are underway,” he said.
