Bashundhara Kings and Dhaka Mohammedan played out a goalless draw on Tuesday evening in the Federation Cup at the Shaheed Dhirendranath Datta Stadium in Cumilla, a result that left Group B finely balanced with two matches still to play.
Both sides had chances to win a tense domestic rivalry that once again lived up to its billing, even if the scoreboard did not. Bashundhara Kings thought they had taken the lead just before half-time when Rakib Hossain finished neatly from Faisal Ahmed Fahim’s cross from the left. The assistant referee’s flag, raised for offside as Rakib moved ahead of the Mohammedan defence, ruled the goal out.
Kings dominated large spells of possession, particularly in the second half, but the absence of Brazilian forward Dorielton was evident. The champions created several promising attacking moves yet lacked precision in the final third. Mohammedan goalkeeper Sujan played a decisive role, producing a series of saves to deny Kings despite sustained pressure.
Mohammedan, however, came closest to snatching victory late on. In six minutes of added time, Rahim Uddin broke through on the counter and entered the Kings penalty area with only the goalkeeper to beat. Instead of shooting, he opted to square the ball for Samuel Boetang, but the pass was miscontrolled and defender Topu Barman cleared the danger.
The draw leaves Mohammedan second in Group B with five points from three matches, level with leaders Fortis but behind on goal difference. Bashundhara Kings sit fourth with two points from two matches, having returned to Federation Cup action after more than two months. Police FC are third with three points from two games, while Arambagh remain bottom without a point.
Only the top two teams from the group will advance to the next round.
Matches between Mohammedan and Kings have been marked by controversy throughout the season. Their Challenge Cup opener was played in Cumilla amid disputes over venue readiness, a game Kings won. Mohammedan later raised concerns after Kings were unable to train ahead of a league fixture, which Mohammedan lost 2-0. A scheduled Federation Cup meeting on 16 December was postponed following disagreements over a proposed closed-door match at the National Stadium due to Victory Day events in Cumilla. Tuesday’s rearranged fixture finally brought the two rivals together again, though neither could find a decisive breakthrough.
