A court has granted a one-day remand for East West University student Amjad Hossain Bukhari, who was arrested while putting up a poster in front of Motijheel City Center in favour of the banned organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir.
On Tuesday, Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Shefatullah issued the remand order. The case’s investigating officer, SI Saiful Islam of the Counter Terrorism Investigation Unit, had applied on 4 December for a three-day remand for him in the case of Paltan Model Police Station.
SI Md Rukunuzzaman of the Prosecution Department confirmed the remand information.
The remand application stated that in this incident, the accused Amjad Hossain Bukhari was arrested on 23 September and produced before the court. Later, the court ordered him to be sent to jail. While the accused was detained in jail, he was shown arrested in the case under the Anti-Terrorism Act of Paltan Model Police Station.
If the accused is taken on remand and interrogated by the police, important information regarding this case can be obtained. For this reason, the investigating officer applied for a three-day remand for the accused. Later, the court set the hearing date for 23 December in the presence of the accused.
During the hearing, Amjad Hossain Bukhari was produced before the court. On his behalf, Advocate Ila Naznin applied for bail, seeking cancellation of the remand. She said, “This accused was not present at the scene. He knows nothing about the incident. He is a student of East West University. He has exams coming up. I plead for the cancellation of the remand. If necessary, he may be interrogated at the jail gate.” After the hearing, the court ordered his one-day remand.
From the case details, it is known that on 7 March, around 2pm, around 2000 unknown individuals came out in a procession from the North Gate of Baitul Mukarram Mosque under banners like “March for Khilafat”, “Hizbut Tahrir”, and “Ulayah Bangladesh”, heading towards Paltan intersection.
At that time, police prevented them. Defying the police, they moved forward onto the street holding flags, banners, sticks, and shouting various slogans in an attempt to oppose the government and attack the country’s sovereignty. When police obstructed them, the accused started throwing bricks and stones at them.
In connection with this incident, OC SI Russel Mia of Paltan Model Police Station filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act at the concerned police station on 8 March.
