Influencer Kaarina Kaiser was the standout winner at this year’s ‘Shomotay Tarunno: Youth for Equality’ awards, where she received the Gender Sensitive Influencer of the Year title for her work promoting gender equity and responsible digital behaviour.
The ceremony took place on Wednesday at the Aloki Convention Center in Dhaka as part of the Shomotay Tarunno: Youth for Equality Project. The initiative is jointly run by the JAAGO Foundation Trust and Plan International Bangladesh with support from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Kaiser, known for her concise online commentary on representation, social justice and ethical conduct, was recognised for using her platforms to challenge stereotypes and cultivate constructive dialogue. Organisers said her influence has helped young audiences navigate a digital landscape that is increasingly shaped by misinformation and polarisation.
Three other content creators were acknowledged. Md Nur A Alam and Erin Akter won in the category for emerging voices in gender advocacy on social media. Murshidul Alam Bhuiya received a special mention for creative storytelling.
Speaking at the event, Chief Guest M A Akher, Director-Admin at the Department of Youth Development, said young digital creators are reshaping online culture. He noted that promoting respect and equality has the potential to shift public attitudes and strengthen responsible digital citizenship.
Bert Essink, Financial Adviser at the Netherlands Embassy, emphasised the influence of online media on public life. He said youth involvement is vital for advancing gender equality and human rights, and that the awards reflect the broader contributions of creators who work to make digital spaces more inclusive.
Plan International Bangladesh’s Director of Programmes, Mohammed Maheen Newaz Chowdhury, described the initiative as an effort to challenge discriminatory norms. He said the long-term goal is to ensure that girls in Bangladesh can participate online without fear of harassment or exclusion.
JAAGO’s Founder and Executive Director Korvi Rakshand, who presided over the ceremony, highlighted the role of youth-led creativity in driving social change. He praised the awardees as individuals who prioritise integrity and positive impact over fleeting trends.
The programme also included a short theatrical performance by Bhoirobee and a musical segment by singer Karishma Sanu Sovvota, held in observance of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
Through the Shomotay Tarunno Project, 156 young content creators from eight divisions have received training on gender equality, leadership, ethical storytelling, and responsible digital practice. Organisers hope the effort will contribute to a safer and more equitable online environment for the country’s youth.
JAAGO Foundation Trust, which operates in all 64 districts through Volunteer for Bangladesh, continues to lead national initiatives on civic engagement, gender justice, climate awareness and digital inclusion.
