NCP Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam has said that the July mass uprising is a continuation of the Liberation War.
He said, “There is no conflict between the Liberation War and the July mass uprising. The July mass uprising is another continuation of the Liberation War.”
He made the remarks on Thursday while taking part in the discussion on the thanksgiving motion on the President’s speech in the Jatiya Sangsad.
Nahid further said, “The Liberation War is the foundation of Bangladesh, and our position on this is uncompromising. We honour the Liberation War. The participation of the current generation in the July mass uprising has renewed the Liberation War.”
“In the Liberation War, we spoke of equality, human dignity, and social justice. In the July mass uprising, we have also spoken against discrimination — where is the difference?”
However, he clarified that no one has claimed the July mass uprising to be greater than the Liberation War. According to him, “The Liberation War is the foundation of Bangladesh. On this issue, we are uncompromising.”
In the same discussion, he described President Md Sahabuddin as “corrupt, a liar, and incompetent” and demanded his removal and arrest.
He alleged that during his tenure as a Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission, Sahabuddin carried out three specific “assignments” ensuring the punishment of Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman, giving a clean chit to the Awami League over Padma Bridge corruption allegations, and securing the release of Sheikh Hasina and other Awami League leaders from cases filed during the Fakhruddin-Moeen Uddin period.
Nahid questioned why the President is not being removed despite there being no constitutional crisis at present. At the same time, he criticised the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, saying, “By citing constitutional continuity, the BNP has obstructed the removal of the President.”
Referring to the Constitution, he said, “The 1972 Constitution is inherently undemocratic. It is a constitution that concentrates all power in the hands of a single individual.”
He claimed that it was framed with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at its centre.
Regarding the July Charter, he alleged, “The July National Charter has been tainted by a note of dissent. Through this, it has been turned into a document of endless deception.”
He added that his party did not sign the charter on the day of signing and instead later submitted its views.
