Julian Quinones scored the first goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on 9th minute as hosts Mexico took an early lead against South Africa in Mexico City on Wednesday.
Mexico controlled possession from kick-off and forced South Africa deep inside their own half. Ronwen Williams kept the score level with a strong low save after Raul Jimenez struck from the edge of the area in the sixth minute.
The breakthrough came five minutes later after a costly mistake from Williams. The goalkeeper attempted a short pass out from the back under pressure, but the ball reached a team-mate in trouble. Quinones closed down quickly, won possession and raced clear before driving his finish past Williams.
The Colombia-born forward sparked huge celebrations inside the stadium as Mexico grabbed the opening goal of the tournament in front of their home crowd.
