Abnormal erosion has struck the Jamuna riverbank protection area in Kazipur Upazila of Sirajganj during the dry season, with sections of the embankment collapsing into the river, leaving residents in fear.
At least two points along the Palashpur ghat area caved in on 17 April, causing significant portions of the protected riverbank to be swallowed by the Jamuna.
Residents living along the river are passing anxious days as the erosion threatens homes, croplands and infrastructure.
Local people alleged that prolonged illegal sand extraction using dredgers has weakened the riverbed and triggered the collapse.
They said sand lifting in violation of rules in Kazipur Ecopark, Palashpur, Meghai and Dhekuria ghat areas created deep pits in the riverbed.
As the river’s water level has started rising recently, the current has been hitting the western bank with pressure, leading to the erosion.
The situation has raised fresh concerns ahead of the monsoon, with Meghai embankment, nearby farmland and homesteads now at risk.
The riverbank protection project, completed in 2014 after starting in 2010, is now facing renewed vulnerability, locals said.
“Sand was extracted throughout the dry season from Palashpur ghat, damaging the riverbed,” said Palashpur village resident Shanta.
“Pits formed in the riverbed are directing strong currents towards the protection structure, causing erosion. With the monsoon ahead, the river may turn more dangerous. At least 10 houses, including mine, are now under threat,” she added.
Another resident Momeda Khatun said sandbags and stone blocks are already being washed away into the river.
“Our homes may collapse at any time. We have nowhere else to go and no financial means to relocate,” she said.
Sirajganj Water Development Board Executive Engineer Md Mokhlesur Rahman said a section of the protection area has been damaged.
“We are dumping sand-filled geo bags in the affected areas on an emergency basis. Both legal and illegal sand extraction take place, and we are trying to control it,” he said.
Kazipur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Mostafijur Rahman said the law prohibits sand extraction within one kilometre of important structures such as embankments, bridges and residential areas.
“We have sought clarification from the roads department regarding road damage caused during sand lifting. Earlier, we conducted drives and fined offenders for attempting extraction in the Ecopark area,” he said.
