Former England midfielder James Milner has announced his retirement from football at the age of 40, bringing an end to a remarkable Premier League career that lasted 24 seasons.
Milner spent the last three years with Brighton. Before that, he enjoyed successful spells with several top clubs and won three Premier League titles. Two came with Manchester City and one with Liverpool.
He also played a key role in Liverpool’s Champions League triumph in 2019.
The veteran midfielder leaves the game as one of the most respected players of his generation. During his long career, he broke the record for the most Premier League appearances.
Milner confirmed his decision through a post on Instagram.
“After 24 seasons in the Premier League, it feels like the right time to bring an end to my playing career,” Milner said.
“From making my debut for Leeds, who I supported growing up, at the age of 16 and becoming the Premier League’s youngest scorer, I could never have dreamed of the journey I’ve been on.”
Milner began his professional career with Leeds United, the club he supported as a boy. He made his Premier League debut at just 16 and quickly became one of the brightest young talents in English football.
Over the next two decades, he built a career known for consistency, professionalism and success at the highest level.
