Jamaat-e-Islami’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher has expressed doubt over whether the national charter will be finalised by the end of July.
He made the remarks on Wednesday during a press conference held during an intermission of a meeting with the National Consensus Commission at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.
Taher said, “I doubt whether it will happen in July. Even if we need a bit more time to reach consensus, we are in favour of exercising patience and continuing the dialogue.’
He added, “We hope to reach consensus on the most important 5 to 7. Even if not all, we are optimistic about consensus on at least 75% to 80% of the key issues.”
He went on to say that he had faith in the interim government and commission to handle the matter the rest of issues diligently.
When asked about Jamaat’s position on recent discussions to limit the prime minister’s tenure, he said, “We agree with the idea of limiting the PM’s tenure to a maximum of 10 years in their lifetime.”
At the beginning of the meeting, National Consensus Commission Vice President Ali Riaz had expressed hope that a charter would be finalised by mid-July.
Wednesday’s meeting included representatives from various political parties including BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and NCP.
