Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher has condemned the recently announced election roadmap, describing it as a plan to disrupt free and fair elections. Speaking at a gathering of the party’s election officials in Kalikapur Union, Chauddagram Upazila, Taher accused the Chief Adviser of failing to honour previous commitments with the unveiling of the roadmap.
Taher, addressing the assembly at the Cumilla Central Medical College auditorium on Friday morning, stated that Jamaat has no objections to holding elections in February, as per the schedule set for February 15. However, he stressed that certain essential issues must be addressed to ensure the transparency and fairness of the process.
One of the main concerns raised by Taher was the legal recognition of the July Charter, which he insisted should form the basis for the February election. “The election must be conducted in line with the reforms outlined in the July Charter,” he said.
Taher further argued that the current roadmap, as it stands, is a “conspiracy” aimed at undermining a fair election. He assured the party’s unwavering commitment to pressuring both the government and the Election Commission to ensure the election follows the July Charter reforms and incorporates the proportional representation (PR) system.
The Nayeb-e-Ameer also took issue with the Election Commission’s failure to clarify whether the traditional election system or the proposed PR system would be implemented. He described this as a major oversight and called for an apology from the commission.
The meeting was chaired by Chauddagram Upazila Jamaat Ameer Mu Mahfuzur Rahman, with Jamaat Central Majlis-e-Shura member Abdus Sattar, Cumilla South District Jamaat Ameer Advocate Mohammad Shahjahan, and several other leaders also addressing the gathering.
