The Department of Environmental Science at the International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT) successfully organised a national seminar titled “Enhancing Global Sustainability and Sustainable Future” on 10 December 2025.
The event brought together distinguished guests, environmental experts, faculty members, and students to explore solutions for a resilient, climate-smart future.
The seminar began with the national anthem and a moment of silence to honor IUBAT’s esteemed Founder Vice Chancellor Prof Dr M Alimullah Miyan and former Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Mahmuda Khanum.
Prof Dr Md Ataur Rahman, Chair of the Department of Environmental Science, delivered the welcome address and keynote speech, emphasizing the urgent need for reforms in consumption patterns and human behavior to achieve true sustainability.
Prof Selina Nargis, Treasurer and Director of Administration at IUBAT, stressed the inseparable link between environmental protection and sustainable development, calling for collective action from individuals, industries, and governments.
Faculty members Dr Md Shafiqul Islam, Dr M Rehan Dastagir, and Dr Ferdous Ahmed presented research on the critical role of urban greenery in reducing air and noise pollution in Dhaka. Dr Sohag Miah, Assistant Professor at the University of Chittagong, shared successful campus initiatives focused on conserving native tree species and engaging students in long-term plantation programs.
Bidhan Chandra Pal, Founder and Managing Director of Probha Aurora, highlighted Bangladesh’s leadership in the UNESCO Greening Education Partnership and encouraged participants to focus on scalable innovations instead of relying solely on climate compensation.
Guest of Honour Masud Iqbal Md Shameem, Director of the Department of Environment (DoE), Government of Bangladesh, discussed national environmental policy priorities and regulatory measures essential for sustainability.
Dr Susan Vize, Head of Office and UNESCO Representative to Bangladesh, shared key outcomes from COP30 in Belém, Brazil, emphasizing the importance of implementation, accountability, and youth engagement in shaping the future global sustainability framework.
IUBAT Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Abdur Rab, in his presidential address, urged individuals, families, and institutions to adopt practical, everyday measures for resource conservation, stressing that global commitments must translate into local actions.
The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Mariym Sultana Marry, Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Science. The event ended with the presentation of tokens of appreciation and a group photograph.
This national seminar reinforced IUBAT’s strong commitment to sustainability education, through initiatives such as its compulsory Environmental Science course, annual Sustainability Day, and award-winning community projects. IUBAT continues to prepare graduates who contribute meaningfully to national and global sustainability goals.
