Gono Odhikar Parishad General Secretary Rashed Khan has called for the immediate removal of Home Adviser Jahangir Alam to ensure a free and fair election.
His remarks came on Saturday while expressing serious concerns over the law and order situation following the attack of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi in front of Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.
“The home adviser cannot evade responsibility for this incident,” said Rashed Khan.
He further stated, “If my brother Osman Hadi does not return to us, the government must be held accountable.
The home adviser must take responsibility for this incident. Under the leadership of this broken adviser, law enforcement will never function properly.”
Rashed Khan called on the government to remove the Home adviser as a first step towards ensuring fair elections, adding, “If the government truly wants a fair election, the removal of the Jahangir Alam should be their priority.”
He also criticised the lack of changes within the advisory council despite administrative changes at the DC and SP levels, saying, “The law and order situation cannot be managed with this incompetent home adviser.”
The Gono Odhikar Parishad leader demanded the home adviser’s resignation within 24 hours, urging the individual to take responsibility for the incident.
Rashed Khan highlighted the growing insecurity, stating, “The safety of the general public cannot be ensured in the current situation.” He also claimed that the Awami League has targeted several individuals, including Osman Hadi.
“We don’t know if Osman Hadi will return to us. What happened to him could happen to me or you tomorrow,” he warned.
Raising concerns over how elections and public outreach can occur in an unsafe environment, he added, “If the government cannot ensure the safety of its citizens, they have no moral right to organise elections.”
He concluded by demanding the swift arrest of those responsible for the attack on Osman Hadi and the initiation of a comprehensive manhunt.
On Friday afternoon, Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Mancha, was shot on Box Culvert Road in the Bijoynagar area of Dhaka, shortly after exiting Juma prayers.
