An assistant professor of Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia was stabbed to death allegedly by a university employee, who later attempted to take his own life, on campus Wednesday afternoon.

The victim, Assistant Professor Asma Sadia Runa, chairperson of the Social Welfare Department, was attacked inside her office at the Social Science Faculty building around 4pm, according to university sources.

The accused, identified as Fazlu, allegedly stabbed the teacher before attempting to take his own life. Both were rushed to Kushtia General Hospital in critical condition, where doctors pronounced Runa dead.

According to sources, Fazlu had recently been transferred from the Social Welfare Department to the Political Science Department following a dispute over salary-related issues. Preliminary reports suggest the attack may have been motivated by resentment over the transfer.

Mahmud, a student of the department, said Fazlu had been reassigned about a month ago but was dissatisfied with the decision. “No other officials or staff members were present at the time. He took advantage of the situation,” he said.

An Ansar member on duty said they broke open the office door after hearing cries for help. “We found the teacher lying face down on the floor, and Fazlu had attempted suicide,” he said.

University authorities were informed immediately, added.
