No dengue deaths were reported in Sitakunda over the past week following a seven-day special drive, Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mian said on Saturday.
Hospital admissions were also declining, he said.
The DC was speaking at a dengue control programme in Karnaphuli upazila, where mosquito-control operations were carried out at 10 identified hotspots.
Chattogram saw a surge in infections in September, with 21 deaths reported across the district by the end of the month, according to Zahidul. Sitakunda and Karnaphuli were among the upazilas with relatively high infection rates. Hospital admissions in Chattogram city stood at 92 on one day and 47 the following day.
“Following the crash programme, no deaths were reported in Sitakunda last week,” he said. “Treatment alone cannot tackle the disease. We must prevent it.”
Around 2,000 mosques and their premises across the district were brought under a cleanliness drive on 12 September as part of a three-month campaign. Dedicated beds have been set aside at Chattogram Medical College Hospital, Chattogram General Hospital and upazila-level hospitals, while testing kits have been supplied to health facilities.
An awareness rally was held from Sainyartek to Bridgeghat before the DC launched mosquito-control operations at the Charpatharghata Union Parishad office.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (LA) Md Kamruzzaman, Assistant Commissioner (Land) SM Amirul Mostafa and officials from the local administration and health department attended, along with public representatives, business leaders and members of social organisations.
