Islamic Relief Bangladesh, supported by Start Fund Bangladesh, has launched an anticipatory response to protect 2,700 vulnerable families in Sylhet’s haor areas as flash flood risks rise due to upstream rainfall.
Islamic Relief said on Thursday that the programme is underway in eight unions across Companiganj, Kanaighat and Gowainghat, targeting communities ahead of potential flooding during the critical Boro harvest period.
The intervention aims to prevent crop losses, safeguard farmer incomes, and reduce food insecurity by acting on early warning signals before disaster strikes.
Each household is receiving Tk5,000 in flexible cash support to take immediate measures such as hiring labour, arranging harvesting equipment, repairing shelters, securing evacuation, and accessing food.
Priority is being given to female-headed households, the elderly, and persons with disabilities to ensure assistance reaches those most at risk.
Communities are also receiving impact-based alerts on flash floods and lightning to support quick decision-making.
“Anticipatory action is about protecting lives and livelihoods before disaster strikes,” said Islamic Relief Bangladesh Country Director Talha Jamal.
“By acting early, we can help farmers save their crops and preserve their incomes, preventing a crisis before it unfolds,” he said.
The initiative comes as flash flood threats intensify in the haor belt, where timely harvesting determines whether farmers secure their seasonal output or face major losses.
