The interim government on Friday condemned the assault on Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, a key figure of the July Uprising, describing it as a grave blow to democratic values.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the government said, “This act of violence targets not only Nur himself but also the democratic spirit that united the nation during its historic fight for justice and accountability.” It also hailed Nur as a steadfast defender of democracy and people’s rights.
The government pledged a prompt and impartial inquiry into the incident. “No matter their position or influence, no one will be exempted from justice. Accountability will be ensured transparently and without delay,” the statement read.
Authorities have already set up a specialised medical board to supervise the treatment of Nur and other injured party members. The government said the victims would receive top-level medical care and, if needed, be sent abroad at state expense for further treatment.
The statement added that the thoughts and prayers of the nation are with Nur, his injured colleagues and their families at this difficult time.
Looking back at his political journey, the government noted, “Nurul Haque Nur played a defining role in the 2018 anti-quota protests against the repressive rule of Sheikh Hasina. As a student leader, he rallied young people, united diverse groups, and stood courageously against injustice.”
It further recalled that Nur was arrested and tortured in custody during the July Uprising, when his leadership became a symbol of the people’s collective demand for free and fair democracy. The government said his bravery and sacrifices would remain etched in the nation’s history.
The statement also urged all political and social groups that took part in the uprising to stay united. “Such unity is vital to safeguard the gains of our struggle, to resist conspiracies against the people’s mandate, and to guarantee a smooth transition to democracy,” it said.
Reaffirming its commitment, the interim government declared that the next national election would be held on schedule in early February 2026. “This is our solemn promise to the people. Any attempt to delay, derail or obstruct the election will be resisted firmly by the Interim Government and the democracy-loving citizens of Bangladesh,” it warned.
“The people’s will is final, and no destructive force will be permitted to disrupt our democratic journey,” the statement concluded.
