Indonesia has suspended its participation in the Board of Peace initiative, a scheme launched by US President Donald Trump, due to the intensifying military situation in the Middle East.
Foreign Minister Sugiono attributed the decision to recent regional developments, noting that global attention has shifted toward the consequences of the Iranian conflict, reports Anadolu Agency.
He stated that the escalation has directly impacted the foreign policy agendas of the countries associated with the project.
The minister further noted that Indonesia would undertake comprehensive consultations with its Gulf partners, whom he described as being most affected by the ongoing hostilities and heightened tensions.
This move also follows significant domestic pressure from Indonesian political and religious organisations. Critics have argued that joining a body led by the Trump administration could compromise Indonesia’s long-standing advocacy for the Palestinian cause.
Additionally, the Indonesian Ulema Council has called for an immediate exit from the initiative. The council asserted that the board lacks utility while military operations persist in the region.
Reports from the Middle East Monitor suggest the pause occurs as the initiative faces growing diplomatic scrutiny against a backdrop of high regional instability.
