A Lalmonirhat court on Wednesday sentenced an Indian national to two years of rigorous imprisonment for smuggling Indian goods into Bangladesh.
The convict, Samir Pal, is a resident of Changrabandha area under Mekhliganj Police Station in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal, India.
Judge SM Shofiqul Islam of Lalmonirhat Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-2 pronounced the verdict in the presence of the accused. The court also fined him Tk200.
According to the case documents, a team of the Teesta Battalion (61 Border Guard Bangladesh) conducted a raid at Burimari Zero Point in Patgram upazila on the morning of 6 November, 2025.
During the operation, BGB members detained Samir Pal along with an Indian truck.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 272 kilograms of a lead-like substance worth Tk1.08 lakh, 1,500 Ocimin 80mg tablets valued at Tk6.37 lakh, and 1,500 Osimart tablets worth Tk4.99 lakh.
The BGB also seized the truck, valued at around Tk45 lakh.
Nayeb Subedar Md Anjarul Haque of 61 BGB later filed a case with Patgram Police Station.
After completing the investigation, police submitted a chargesheet before the court.
In its verdict, the court ordered that the seized truck be auctioned in accordance with legal procedures and that the proceeds be deposited into the government treasury.
It also directed the Ministry of Home Affairs to take necessary steps to deport Samir Pal to India after completion of his sentence.
Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) Shamsul Alam Milon said the prosecution successfully proved the charges as the accused was arrested with the smuggled goods in his possession.
He added that the court delivered the verdict within a short period after examining testimonies from both the prosecution and defence sides.
