BanglaFact, the media and fact-checking wing of the Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB), has dismissed a report by Indian news outlet “India Today” about the Khagrachhari incident, calling it entirely baseless.
According to BanglaFact’s investigation, “India Today” published a report on 29 September, claiming that the Bangladesh Army opened fire on protests by Buddhists and Hindus over alleged rape and attacks on temples in Khagrachhari.
The report portrayed the incident as a targeted attack on Hindu-Buddhist communities. However, BanglaFact’s team found no evidence supporting any such attacks on Hindu or Buddhist temples, nor any gatherings related to these supposed events.
As a result, the claim that Hindus protesting was shot by the Bangladesh Army is categorically false.
BanglaFact further emphasized that this is not the first time India Today’s reports on Bangladesh have been called into question.
The fact-checking team also pointed out a previous instance where India Today incorrectly reported the identity of a Muslim businessman, Sohagh, who was murdered in front of Dhaka’s Mitford Hospital on 9 July, erroneously identifying him as Hindu.
