Two army officers, who were arrested in a case of crimes against humanity committed in Dhaka’s Rampura during the July uprising, have been taken to the International Crimes Tribunal for the charge framing hearing.
Around 10am, they were brought from the special prison at Dhaka Cantonment to the tribunal for the hearing. The two accused are Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Redwanul Islam and Major Md Rafat-bin-Alam. They were serving in Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at the time of the July uprising.
On Thursday, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 is set to hold the hearing against four persons, including the two army officers, in the case.
Earlier, on 24 November, ICT-1 set Thursday as the date for the hearing of this case.
The other two accused are former Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Md Rashedul Islam and former Officer-in-Charge Md Mashiur Rahman. Both remain fugitives.
The lawyers for the two army officers had filed a petition to conduct the hearing virtually. The tribunal is also scheduled to hear that matter on Thursday.
Charges of crimes against humanity were brought in connection with the killing of at least 28 people in Rampura on 18 and 19 July last year.
Earlier, on 22 October, Lieutenant Colonel Redwanul and Major Rafat were produced before the tribunal along with 13 other army officers. On that day, the tribunal sent them to jail. Subsequently, they were placed in a government-declared special prison at Dhaka Cantonment.
