The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 on Wednesday fixed 7 June for hearing charges in a case over the alleged staged raid at a building known as “Jahajbari” in Dhaka’s Kalyanpur area in 2016 that left nine people dead.
The tribunal led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder passed the order.
Earlier on 22 February, the tribunal ordered authorities to publish notices in two national dailies asking six fugitive accused, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, to surrender before the court.
The tribunal had issued arrest warrants against the six accused on January 29 after taking cognisance of formal charges brought against eight individuals.
The fugitives are Sheikh Hasina, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Sheikh Muhammad Maruf Hasan, Monirul Islam, Krishna Podo Roy and Abdul Baten.
The ICT prosecution submitted the formal charges to the registrar’s office on 29 January.
Earlier, on 24 March, 2025, the tribunal showed former inspector general of police AKM Shahidul Haque and former Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah arrested in the case.
According to prosecutors, members of different units of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police and Rapid Action Battalion conducted a raid at the house in Kalyanpur on J26 uly, 2016.
Later, allegations emerged that the raid had been staged and that the nine people killed after being labelled militants had no links to militancy.
It was also alleged that the victims had been kept in police custody for a long period before being shot dead at close range.
Following the incident, then police chief AKM Shahidul Haque visited the scene and claimed the deceased were members of the banned militant outfit Neo-Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (Neo-JMB).
