Angelina Jolie, long celebrated both as an actress and humanitarian, has voiced concern over the current sociopolitical climate in the US, saying she no longer “recognises” her country despite the deep love she holds for it.

Jolie made the remarks at the San Sebastián Film Festival in Spain, where she was presenting Couture, a personal drama directed by Alice Winocour that debuted earlier this month at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Addressing reporters, the Oscar-winning star reflected, “It’s obviously a very difficult question… I love my country, but I don’t, at this time, recognise my country. I’ve always lived internationally; my family, my friends, my life are international. My worldview is united, global. So anything, anywhere, that divides or restricts personal freedoms and expression, I believe, is deeply dangerous.”

She added, “These are such serious times. We must be careful not to speak casually. But of course, like all of you and everyone watching, I feel these are very, very heavy times we are living through together.”

Jolie did not cite a specific incident, but her comments come amid heightened debate over free speech in the US.

The backdrop includes controversy following the sudden suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! after the host made a joke at the expense of former president Donald Trump in relation to the fatal shooting of far-right activist Charlie Kirk.
