Home Minister Sudan Gurung has resigned from his post, citing the need for an impartial investigation amid growing scrutiny over his alleged financial and business dealings.
His resignation comes as controversy intensifies over alleged links with businessman Deepak Bhatta, who is currently under investigation for money laundering offences, reports The Kathmandu Post.
Gurung announced his decision through a Facebook post on Wednesday, stating that he was stepping down to ensure a fair investigation and to avoid any conflict of interest while holding office.
“To ensure an impartial investigation into matters related to me and to avoid any conflict of interest while in office or any impact on the process, I have resigned from the post of Home Minister, effective from today,” he wrote.
He also acknowledged recent public concerns regarding his investments, including share-related dealings, saying he had taken the allegations seriously.
“For me, ethics is greater than position, and there is no greater force than public trust,” he added. Referring to ongoing public protests demanding governance reforms, he said the message from the movement was clear-that public life must remain clean and leadership accountable.
Earlier, Gurung had said he would cooperate fully with any investigation. In a social media post on Monday, he described the allegations as part of “rumours” and stressed the importance of separating facts from speculation.
“Allegations and truth are not the same.
Decisions should be based on evidence, not sentiment,” he wrote, adding that he would abide by all party decisions and cooperate with authorities.
Gurung’s resignation marks the second ministerial exit in the current government led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah. On 19 April, Labour, Employment and Social Security Minister Deepak Kumar Sah was removed from office after his party, the Rastriya Swatantra Party, recommended his dismissal over alleged breaches of internal discipline.
Sah was dismissed following findings by the party’s central disciplinary committee, which accused him of misusing his position to retain his wife, Junu Shrestha, as a member of the Health Insurance Board despite prolonged inactivity in the post.
