Prince William has praised England’s players after their heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the FIFA World Cup semifinal.
The Prince of Wales said he was “gutted” by the result but urged the team to be proud of what they achieved during the tournament.
In a message shared by Kensington Palace, Prince William thanked the players for their efforts and praised their performances throughout the World Cup.
“The fight and belief you have shown has inspired us all. The most complete England team in a tournament.”
“Hold your heads high.”
He signed the message with the letter “W”, showing that it came from him personally. Prince William is the patron of the Football Association.
England took the lead in the second half through Anthony Gordon after a goalless opening 45 minutes. However, Argentina scored twice late in the match to book their place in the World Cup final against Spain.
Prince William, a well known Aston Villa supporter, also thanked everyone connected with the England team.
“Thank you to everyone on and off the pitch, for an incredible tournament,” he said.
The Royal Family also paid tribute to the Three Lions after the defeat.
A message shared on its social media account read: “Commiserations to Harry and the team.”
The post included a picture of England captain Harry Kane embracing teammate Jude Bellingham after the final whistle.
The statement added: “While you Three Lions may be licking your wounds today, you remain the pride of a nation and will rise again.”
British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also reacted to England’s exit.
He said he was “gutted” by the defeat but praised the team’s commitment throughout the tournament.
“Tonight wasn’t the result we all hoped for,” Starmer said.
“But this England team has given it their all.”
Earlier in the day, Starmer had also spoken about England’s World Cup campaign during his final address in the House of Commons as prime minister.
England’s dream of reaching the World Cup final came to an end, but the team received strong support from members of the Royal Family and the country’s political leaders after the defeat.
