Bangladesh High Commissioner to the Maldives Md Nazmul Islam visited the injured and the mortuary on Saturday following a tragic gas cylinder explosion that killed five Bangladeshi expatriate workers on Digurah island.
The blast occurred Thursday night at a guest house on the island, approximately 100 kilometers from the capital Male. Seven people were rescued with critical burns, but five later died while undergoing treatment.
The High Commissioner first visited the injured – Jamal Uddin and Saddam Hossain – at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Male, inquiring about their medical care. He then proceeded to the Galulu Morgue to pay respects to the deceased.
The victims have been identified as Taj Uddin Islam, Md Sador Ali, Md Robin Mollah, Safiqul Islam, and Md Noornabi Sarkar. The bodies of Md Sador Ali and Safiqul Islam are expected to arrive in Bangladesh on Sunday.
Upon receiving news of the incident, the High Commission immediately coordinated with Maldivian authorities to facilitate repatriation of the bodies. Officials have been in constant contact with the victims’ families, providing all possible assistance.
The two critically injured Bangladeshis have been transferred to a Male hospital for advanced treatment, with their medical care under close monitoring.
The High Commission has also contacted the concerned company to ensure appropriate compensation for the deceased. Officials visited the scene immediately after the accident to assist and arranged alternative accommodation for other affected Bangladeshi expatriates.
