Netflix is bringing its hit coming-of-age series Heartstopper to an end with Heartstopper Forever, a two-hour feature film that replaces a fourth season and concludes the beloved story of Nick and Charlie, The Hollywood Reporter reports.
The film premiered on July 17, bringing to a close a journey that began nearly a decade ago with Alice Oseman’s webcomic before growing into a global streaming phenomenon.
Oseman said the story has evolved alongside them over the past 10 years. They began writing the comic in 2016 after securing a publishing deal as a teenager.
Netflix adapted it in 2022, introducing audiences to Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson as they navigated friendship, identity, mental health and first love.
The feature follows Nick, Charlie and their close-knit group of friends as they step into adulthood and face life-changing decisions.
Kit Connor, who plays Nick, said the characters have reached a point where they must confront their futures and find closure.
Executive producer Patrick Walters said the cast and creative team matured alongside the series. He recalled that Oseman, Connor and Joe Locke all took on major roles for the first time when production began.
They returned for the final chapter with greater confidence and experience.
Heartstopper became one of Netflix’s biggest young adult successes. Its first season alone attracted more than 53.5 million viewing hours, while all three seasons spent several weeks in the platform’s Top 10 rankings.
Oseman said the project transformed their career by replacing solitary writing with collaboration across a large creative team.
Instead of producing another television season, the creators chose to end the story with a feature-length film. Oseman and Walters said several factors influenced the decision, including the increasingly busy schedules of the lead actors.
They also wanted a more cinematic ending that reflected how the audience had grown up alongside the characters.
Joe Locke said the film gave the cast more time to perfect each scene. He described the transition from television to film as a fitting way to conclude the story while preserving its emotional depth.
Since its debut, Heartstopper has won praise for placing LGBTQIA+ characters at the heart of a sincere coming-of-age story.
The series also featured acclaimed actors, including Olivia Colman, Jonathan Bailey and Hayley Atwell, and earned recognition for its inclusive storytelling.
The film also addresses growing concerns over LGBTQIA+ rights. Oseman said it reflects the fears and frustrations many transgender people currently face while remaining true to the values that have defined Heartstopper.
As the story reaches its conclusion, Oseman said they hope Heartstopper leaves behind more than a romance.
They believe its lasting legacy will remind young people that they deserve to feel seen, accepted and hopeful, regardless of the challenges they face.
