Jantar Mantar has been de-notified as a designated protest venue, while three alternative sites for demonstrations have been announced in a Delhi Police circular issued on Monday.

The circular said the Ministry of Home Affairs had formed a committee to identify suitable alternative venues where citizens could exercise their right to organise protests and demonstrations in place of the existing designated site, reports Hindustan Times.

Following the committee’s recommendations, authorities have de-notified Jantar Mantar as a protest venue and designated three new locations: Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground.

Delhi Police said it would issue a separate circular outlining the revised SOP for organising protests and demonstrations at the three venues.

Jantar Mantar has served as a focal point for youth-led protests since June this year.

The demonstrations were led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), founded by Abhijeet Dipke, and eventually led to the resignation of education minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged examination irregularities.

The venue returned to the spotlight last month after an explosive news investigation raised questions about Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral irregularities, giving fresh momentum to the Opposition’s allegations of “vote chori” (vote theft).
