Five researchers from Gopalganj Science and Technology University (GSTU), including two teachers and three pharmacy students, have secured places on the Stanford–Elsevier list of the world’s top 2% scientists, with one faculty member ranking third among Bangladesh-based researchers.
The university’s Pharmacy Department Chairman and Associate Professor Dr Md Torequl Islam ranked third among 347 researchers from Bangladesh and 5,497th globally in the 2026 single-year research impact ranking.
The list, prepared by Stanford University researchers using data from Netherlands-based academic publisher Elsevier, assesses scientists’ research impact through citation-based indicators.
The other four GSTU researchers are Mathematics Department Professor Dr Dipankar Kumar and Pharmacy Department students Md Arafat Hossain, Md Shimul Bhuiyan and Rayhan Chowdhury.
Torequl Islam’s research subfield is medicinal and biomolecular chemistry.
Dipankar Kumar ranked 229,784th globally.
His principal research field is physics and astronomy, while he secured 4,264th place worldwide in his subfield of applied physics.
Among the students, Md Arafat Hossain, from the Pharmacy Department’s 2018–19 academic session, ranked 319,835th globally and 2,778th in his research subfield of pharmacology and pharmacy.
Md Shimul Bhuiyan, from the department’s 2016–17 session, secured 441,049th place globally and 2,570th in medicinal and biomolecular chemistry.
Rayhan Chowdhury, also from the 2018–19 session, ranked 1,412,380th globally and 11,345th in the same subfield.
The inclusion of two faculty members and three students in the international ranking represents a notable achievement for GSTU’s research activities.
The Stanford–Elsevier database assesses researchers’ citation impact across scientific disciplines, with its single-year ranking reflecting citations received during the relevant calendar year.
