The High Court on Thursday granted bail to journalist Anis Alamgir in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

A bench of Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher issued the order after hearing a bail petition filed on behalf of the journalist.

Lawyers Tamanna Ferdous and Aslam Mia represented Anis Alamgir during the hearing. Aslam Mia later confirmed the court’s order.

Earlier, on 22 January, the Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court-1 in Dhaka rejected Alamgir’s bail petition in the same case.

He has been in jail since December in connection with the case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Uttara West Police Station in the capital.

On 19 February, the High Court issued a rule regarding his bail in the case.

Meanwhile, Alamgir was also shown arrested on 28 January in another case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission over allegations of money laundering, following an order from the Dhaka Metropolitan Special Judge’s Court.

According to case details, Anis Alamgir was taken to the office of the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch for questioning from Dhanmondi in the capital on 14 December last year.

Later, he was shown arrested under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The following day, he was produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Dhaka, which rejected his bail petition and placed him on a five-day remand.

After the remand ended, he was sent to jail on 20 December and has remained in custody since then.
