Chattogram City Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain has warned that hawkers will not be allowed to set up on the footpaths before 4pm to keep the important commercial area of New Market intersection in Chattogram city free from encroachment. He gave this directive on Tuesday while conducting an eviction drive in the area.
The mayor said, “New Market intersection is a busy area. No permanent shops can be set up here by occupying footpaths and roads. Legal action, including eviction, will be taken if the rules are violated.”
He further informed that hawkers can set up shop from 4pm until night, but on the condition that they must sell from wheeled vans or carry goods by hand; permanent structures are not allowed. Additionally, they must clean up their own waste after doing business.
The mayor urged the hawkers to be cautious not to create any obstacles for the movement of pedestrians and commuters. He informed that strict action will be taken if public suffering is caused by occupying footpaths or roads.
During the drive, Special Magistrate Md Soweb Uddin Khan, Executive Officer Anjalik Abhishek Das, and officials from the sanitation department were present.
