Following Bangladesh’s heavy six-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup, Indian commentator and analyst Harsha Bhogle has urged the team to accept reality, avoid making excuses, and concentrate on their crucial next match against Afghanistan.

Batting first, Bangladesh posted 139 for five, but Sri Lanka chased the target in just 14.4 overs. Bangladesh’s bowlers struggled, bowling numerous short deliveries and conceding costly overs. Harsha noted:
“Nishanka plays short balls well. Bangladesh’s pacers bowled too many short deliveries today. The spinners did the same. If you look at overs seven to ten, I think Mehedi bowled a poor over. Rishad gave away 18 runs in one over, bowled five wides and many extras. That’s where the match slipped away.”

He emphasised that the team must avoid excuses:
“I hope Bangladesh won’t make excuses. Whenever you feel that you haven’t played well, that’s when you can start improving. If you begin making excuses… I hope the supporters won’t either. Acknowledging you’re not yet at that level is when the process of getting better begins.”

Despite the defeat, Harsha believes Bangladesh’s Super Four hopes remain alive, though the path is now tougher. “This loss is against a team they have beaten before. But this time, they weren’t really in the fight. They need to recover completely for the big game against Afghanistan,” he said.

Highlighting T20 unpredictability, he added: “Bangladesh has players who can beat Afghanistan. And Afghanistan has players who can beat Bangladesh. Likewise, Afghanistan can beat Sri Lanka, and Sri Lanka can beat Afghanistan. It’s a very competitive group.”

Harsha urged confidence in Bangladesh’s talented youth, including 2019 Under-19 World Cup winners like Tanzyd Hasan Tamim, Parvez Hossain Emon, and Shariful Islam. “Tamim is probably the best batsman Bangladesh has produced. The Under-19 World Cup players will play for 10–15 years. You have to trust them,” he said.

He concluded: “Bangladesh must first forget what happened in this match. Now they must think about how to beat Afghanistan. First, get the two points, then look at net run rate. Don’t overthink—focus on winning the match.”

Bangladesh face Afghanistan in their final group-stage match on 16 September, needing a win and favourable results to secure a Super Four spot.
