A Dhaka court on Tuesday fixed 17 June for the hearing on charge framing against Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam, son of retired Public Service Commission (PSC) driver Syed Abed Ali Jibon, in a case filed over the acquisition of assets beyond known sources of income.
Judge Begum Shamima Afroz of the Dhaka Divisional Special Judge’s Court passed the order after defence lawyers moved a petition seeking to defer the hearing originally scheduled for Tuesday.
The development was confirmed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) prosecutor Delwar Jahan Rumi.
Siam, a former leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, is accused by the ACC of illegally acquiring wealth worth Tk3.30 crore.
Following the submission of a charge sheet under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, he was shown arrested in the case. He has been in jail since 20 January, following his arrest in connection with the high-profile PSC question paper leak scandal.
The case is part of a broader investigation into the family’s finances. On 5 January last year, the ACC filed three separate cases against Abed Ali, his wife Shahrin Akter Shilpi, and Siam.
According to the case records, former PSC driver Syed Abed Ali faces allegations of accumulating Tk3.72 crore beyond his known income.
Furthermore, investigators detected suspicious transactions totalling Tk41.29 crore-comprising Tk20.88 crore in deposits and Tk20.41 crore in withdrawals-across 12 of his bank accounts.
Abed Ali’s wife, Shahrin Akter Shilpi, has been charged with acquiring Tk1.26 crore in unexplained wealth. The ACC also identified suspicious transactions worth Tk3.56 crore across two of her bank accounts.
The court’s decision to move the hearing to 17 June follows the defence’s request for additional time to prepare for the charge framing process.
