The government has decided to take immediate and strict action against those responsible for irregularities in the national school feeding programme after reports of students falling ill from consuming low-quality food.
The move follows media reports that several students in Madaripur Sadar and Chapainawabganj Sadar upazilas became unwell after eating meals provided under the programme, the ministry said in a statement.
In Madaripur, the Deputy Commissioner has formed a five-member committee to investigate the incident.
The project director has also issued a show-cause notice to the food suppliers, asking why their contracts should not be cancelled.
In Chapainawabganj, Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister A N M Ehsanul Huq Milon has directed the Deputy Commissioner to form an inquiry committee including the Civil Surgeon.
The District Primary Education Officer has already submitted a report on the incident, and a show-cause notice is expected to be served to the local supplier.
Legal action will be taken under the Safe Food Act against those found responsible, officials said.
The school feeding programme was introduced to increase attendance in primary schools and ensure students receive essential nutrition.
