Chanchal Chowdhury is set for a new phase in his cross-border career, with two Kolkata productions lined up for release in India.
The acclaimed performer, known for his standout work in films such as ‘Monpura’, has continued to build a strong following with recent releases including ‘Bonolota Express’ and ‘Domm’, both of which have drawn positive audience response.
Expanding his presence in Indian Bengali cinema, Chanchal has completed work on two new films. The first, ‘Shekor’, is directed by Bratya Basu, while the second, ‘Azadi’, is helmed by Suman Mukhopadhyay. One is rooted in literary storytelling, while the other explores themes linked to the Partition era.
Speaking about the release plans, Chanchal said Shekor is expected to arrive in cinemas later this year as post-production moves forward. Azadi is slated for release next year and is also expected to feature on the international festival circuit.
Describing his character in Shekor, the actor said the story centres on a rural family history shaped by unfulfilled love across generations. He plays the son of an elderly man whose past is deeply intertwined with the narrative.
On Azadi, he takes on the role of a police officer within a story shaped by emotional and historical conflict. He noted that the film carries strong emotional weight and reflects on the human cost of Partition.
Chanchal also spoke highly of both directors, describing them as experienced filmmakers with distinct creative voices. He said working with Bratya Basu and Suman Mukhopadhyay had been a rewarding experience and added that both projects allowed him to explore very different characters.
Meanwhile, his recent releases continue to perform steadily. Bonolota Express remains in theatres with sustained audience interest, while Domm is also still screening.
Reflecting on the response, he said he was grateful for the appreciation the films have received and hoped audiences would continue to support his ongoing work.
