Attorney General Ruhul Quddus Kazal has said the state will take necessary steps to ensure a swift appeal hearing in the Ramisa Akter rape and murder case and expedite the execution of the verdict.
After the death sentence verdict against the two accused was announced on Sunday, Attorney General made the remarks during a briefing at his office.
He said that even if the complainant does not file an appeal, the death sentence will automatically go to the High Court as a death reference.
He also mentions, no death sentence can be executed without judicial review by the higher court.
The Attorney General said the government will request the Chief Justice to take necessary steps to ensure the quick disposal of death reference and appeal hearings.
“Chief Justice will be urged to consider forming special benches for speedy disposal of cases involving crimes against women and children” he added.
Kazal said the swift completion of the trial in the Ramisa murder case will be considered a milestone in the country’s judicial system. However, he added that alongside ensuring speedy justice, the state also has a responsibility to ensure whether the convicted persons received fair trial.
Ruhul Quddus Kazal further said that ensuring speedy trial in all cases is the responsibility of the state, but it is not always possible due to practical limitations. He added that the Ramisa murder verdict will remain an important precedent in public memory.
