Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury informed the Jatiya Sangsad on Monday that the government has set a strategic target to achieve a trillion-dollar economy by 2034.

Responding to a written query from SM Jahangir Hossain, Member of Parliament for Dhaka-18, Khosru noted that the country’s per capita income reached $2,769 in the 2024-25 fiscal year. Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed presided over the proceedings of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad first session on the ninth day.

Citing latest official data from Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), Khosru explained that the government is currently developing a comprehensive work plan to reach the trillion-dollar milestone by incorporating investment, employment, and economic democratisation alongside emerging sectors such as the creative economy and the sports economy.

A multifaceted roadmap for income growth

Khosru emphasised that the government is not focusing on a single sector to raise per capita income but is pursuing a broad strategy that simultaneously prioritises employment, investment, production, exports, remittances, skills development, social protection, and macroeconomic stability.

Highest priority is being accorded to job creation within manufacturing, construction, services, information technology, and agro-processing to increase family incomes and reduce unemployment.

To support this, efforts are underway to simplify business expansion and foster an investment-friendly environment to encourage the flow of private capital into productive sectors.

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are being bolstered through easier access to finance and initiatives specifically designed to encourage women and youth entrepreneurs, thereby stimulating local economic activities.

Strategic diversification, human capital

In addition to industrial growth, the government is focused on export diversification and exploring new markets to increase foreign earnings. To strengthen the rural economy, initiatives have been taken to enhance the skills of migrant workers and encourage the use of legal channels for remittances.

This focus on human capital is complemented by the expansion of technical and practical training to meet the demands of domestic and international labour markets, as skilled manpower is considered a fundamental element for increasing productivity.

Simultaneously, the government is strengthening the production base in rural areas through investments in infrastructure, irrigation, and agriculture-based small businesses to ensure growth reaches the majority of the population living outside urban centres.

Implementation and future outlook

A portion of these strategic measures are already being implemented during the current 2025-26 fiscal year, with the remaining initiatives scheduled to be rolled out across short, medium, and long-term phases.

The finance minister stated that these integrated steps are designed to increase overall national income and reduce unemployment while specifically strengthening the country’s export and remittance sectors.

Ultimately, the government aims to ensure that these economic advancements translate into improved livelihoods for the population while successfully protecting the purchasing power of the general public.
